Metal.

I was just poking around on youtube for what everyone pokes around on youtube for (I had nothing to do and not enough time to do something real and useful), and I came across this. I did not realize they made a video for this song, I should pay closer attention. Anyway, this is As I Lay Dying’s Through Struggle. This song is amazing, and if y ou are not used to metal, look up the lyrics.

A Christian College Grimoire.

Man, if there is one thing in this world that I think I have an understanding of it is music and how a band works. Tonight I had my first practice with the chapel band at my college, and let’s just say we had more organization in my high school worship team than in this chapel band.

People here think the reason chapel sucks is a mystery. Ever since day one I thought that I sensed a lack of organization and preparedness. Often the band does not seem to know what they are doing, exception being the Kairos special team that has a month to prepare and takes full advantage of it. The realm of worship requires excellence, and when excellence is not present and the people in leadership are not willing to attempt excellence for risk of failure we cannot expect anyone to follow us. The reason why chapel sucks so bad is simple: the administration does not prepare properly and we, the student leaders (for that is really what we are), do nothing to correct the gross errors.

What needs to happen is this: there needs to be a set of teams that have a set time to practice and a leader who picks the songs. See, then its up to the individual team leaders to organize and the level of skill with the music will flow better because the teams will be familiar with everyone else’s styles. This is what we did in high school, and this is what needs to be done here. We modeled our system after successful bands and worship teams because it worked, it was not original but we stepped it up.
