It is important to think for yourself and not to get hung up on the past. This is incredibly important otherwise you make yourself look like, for lack of a better word, an imbecile.
Take the war in Iraq. I am not here to say who is right and who is wrong. Moralistically whether we should have gone or not is just plain irrelevant at this point and is up to the individuals who are considering the issue to decide for themselves. My point is, we are there. Everyone who is calling out for our removal of troops fails to realize on minor thing: to just remove our troops from the area will destabilize the region creating a massive amount of chaos and blood that will just simply be worse than if we stayed until the good people of Iraq established a stable government. For one thing there is the possibility of Iran producing nuclear weapons in the near future. Not to mention the rather vague term of “sectarian violence.” We all know what Donald Rumsfeld was talking about, but he still felt the need to dress up the term. If the military pulled out, then that would leave a power vacuum that would be filled by the most powerful military party in the area. Of all the options, this would probably be the least peaceful and in actuality would probably be downright bloody.
So those of you who sit there and gripe about the United States still being in Iraq, think about this: if we pulled out of Iraq, you would be hammering the president, the government, and every one of our troops for being quitters once the region destabilized and we had an Iraqi civil war on our hands. The people who complain the most about us being there would be the first to complain about our leaving because the bloodshed would increase and peace would be the least of our concerns.
